A MAN SUSPECTED.

Recently Chief JDclectivo Broberg md Detective Williams ascertained 'hat a man named James lleniniing.vay, who had been a frequent visitor lo the house of one o£ the employees of the Post Office, and who knew something about the "run" of the Parcels Post Office, bad suddenly disappeared from Wellington, and just about the time the crime was committed.

About tho middle of March some nore cancelled notes came to «han<l from the branch at Feilding; but although a strict > watch had been kept by the bank officials, no clue could be .btaiued as to who the person was who had put those notes into circulation. On the 20th inst. the head -office of the bank notified the local police that ■Klargo number of the notes lad reached their Christchurch branch, and the oolice in the southern -«ity were imjne.liatoly communicated with and informed of the fact. Further, tho Wel'ington detectives sent by wire a full description of Hemmingwoy, the man whom they suspected, and asked that ■nquiries should at once be made for him. Ho Vas traced to a private hotel in Christchurch, but on the approaph of a detective he decamped with surprising celerity. But he left a good deal behind him. When hi"? room was searched it was found that he had had in 1113 possession about one hundred of '.he £1 notes, all of them cancelled, and also all the apparatus that wna required for patching them up and causing them to resemblo, unless carefully examined, genuine £1 notes. Tho process was apparently a simple one to an expert. As the notes Avere not_ punched and branded each in the same place, all ho bad to do was to cut from another note sufficient of the printed paper to cover the punch-hole? mid the place where the cancellation stamps bad been impressed. Unless one held these precious documents up to the light or carefully felt them all over with extremely sensitive fingers, tho slight increase in their thickness caused by the "repairs" could not be noticed.
