ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) April \\. — The weather last week was extremely bad, and Wednesday's holiday was entirely spoiled by the heavy rain. The Caledonian sports had to be abandoned. This was unfortunate, a* the competitors mustered strongly, particularly the footballers, who held a practice during the afternoon. The sports will now bo held on Thursday, 22nd inst., and at the close of tin* sports the annual trial match between Stratford and Eltham seniors will' bo played. This will mean a big afternoon's sports, and hopes are expressed that one of the New Plymouth clubs will take part in the tournament. The wet weather is handicapping the progress of the formation of the nwv (Stanners) street, the concrete culvert over the Mangawerowero stream beiug "pushed on between the showers. AsK halting the main streets has also bemi indered by the same causes. Footballers here are showing some activity; in fact, the Mangatoki members have been training for some weeks now, and up to the present have won ] the. three tournaments held in the district. Eltham has decided to send two teams to the New Plymo-iith sports on 1 the 27th. The Association players are asking permission for the use of the Park on Thursday. Up to this season they have had Saturdays, but that day has not proved either to players or spectators. " , According to the telegrams published Mr A. Turhbull, S.M., )s amongst those retiring by age limit from Crown services. The news of his retirement will be received with regret by all those who have had the pleasure of his friendship. His successor so far is not known. , I notice that several people here are cotnplaining of the decision of Taranaki papers not to publish the usual Sunday services in future. It wus decidedly convenient fqr those t who always desired to know /who was going to occupy the pulpit; but the curious can still be satisfied provided tfoe churches are- prepared to advertise in the usual manner. : Farms are s already beginning to change hands, and prices' are still advancing. A lew changes made known to me recently are : vT Leatham takes A. Chisnall's $arm, Ngaire^ 11. Nairn (Mangatningi) an,d W. .(Stuart Road) have, sold- to each othor, and H. Harrison (Eltham) to H. Death (Mangamingi). The latter last year purchased from A. Turner, and after hoidipg the land . less than twelve months sells out at. a tidy advance on ,the* price he secured". tBo land.
