PRISON REFORM.
TWp GAOLS TO BE CLOSED.
*• Per Pr«ss Association. WELLINGTON, April 5. The Government has decided on an advanced scheme, of prison reform. This afternoon Dr. Findlay 'stated that the Wanganui and Hokitika gaols are to bo closed and possibly one or * two other small prisons. This will result in the saving of a very large sum annually. The Government proposes establishing reformatory farms, possibly one in each Island to begin with. The idea is to get young men now in prisons to turn to some honest employment when released, and the agency of the Labour Department's officers will be used in the obiect in view. Dr. Findlay estimates that prisoners "at the tree-planting camps (allowing for the worth of thoir labour) maintain themand leave a balance of £15 4s 3d.
