UPPER HUTT, April 2.
At the Upper Hutt banquet this evening, the Premier dealt at considerable length with the defence policy, and intimated that the Government was bringing about a national system of defence, so that from the time males wont to school until they reached the age of 21 they would receive a thorough military training. Sir Joseph Ward also intimated that tho Government intended to make provision for rifle ranges from one end of tho Dominion to the other, and supply rifle club members with free ammunition to the extent of 250 rounds.
Other matters concerning the defence of tbe colony were dealt with, including the offer oi a battleship, which was not made on the impulse of the moment nor actuated oy jingoism.
