MIDHIRST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Our local School Committee has taken a neu departure this year in that it has given prizes to the school children. To raise money for this purpose a concert was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, 17th inst. Perfect weather brought together a large audience, the hall being packed. Midhirst has earned a reputation for the quality of its school concerts, and Thursday evening was no exception to the rule. The chair was occupied by Mr W. Rogers, member of the Education Board, who during an interval in the programme presented the prizes, every child at school receiving a handsome book. An excellent programme was •rendered. Miss Uhleuberg, Mr J. J. McLeod. and Tiny had to submit encore items, as well as the school children in their songs, "Lindy Lou" and "Nursery Rhymes." Mr Don Cameron and Misses K. Bennett, Auld, and Prideaux were enthusiastically recalled for their excellent acting of "The Fair Unknown," a little comedy in one*act. At the close of the concert refreshments provided by the ladies were handed round, after which the floor was cleared for dancing, which was kept up till the small hours of the morning. Financially the concert was a decided success, the School Committe having a substantial balance in hand after paying for prizes and all other expenses. Midhirst was en feto on Tuesday evening last, the occasion being the visit of McMahon's Circus. As shows of this kind are not of frequent occurrence locally, it is needless to say that a full teut» greeted the performance. The u&ual gymnastic display was concluded by an exhibition of buck-jump-ing; one or two local amateurs trying their skill, but without success. Even our Jehu Tiny found it impossible to stick to a thing that seemed to be a compound of a spiral spring and an indiarubber ball worked by an electric motor.
