NEW STEAMER MAKURA.
A FAST TRAVELLER." Melbourne, November 2. — The Union Company's new steamer Makura has arrived here after a remarkably fast passage. She lowered the record from Durban with only seven out of her eight boilers in use. She covered the distance of 5569 miles in 13 days 20 hours, averaging 16\8.knots all the way. The Rarawa brought 50 tons of general cargo from Onehunga this morning. The Takfipuna will rcsume^her running between Wellington, New Plymouth, and Onehunga on Wednesday. The Corinna, which left this afternoon for Southern ports, has on board for transhipment to the Athenic, at Wellington, for the United Kingdom, 11,000 boxes of butter and 450 packages of cheese from Onehunga, and 10,021 boxes of butter and 1024 packages of cheese from New Plymouth. In common with most ports of the Dominion, Lyttelton is experiencing a very slack time just now in the shipping business, says a local paper. The. Shaw-Savill steamer Kia Ora is to leave Port Chalmers about November 10 and load cargo at Northern ports, sailing about November 30, and being due in London on Jamiary 10, in time for the wool sales on January 19.
