MINING.

lUCH FIND IN WESTRALIA. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright (Received Oct. 31, 9.58 a.m.) PERTH, Oct. 31. By the treatment of 125 pounds of stone from a new reef at Meekathara 500 ounces of gold was gained. Previously another 000 ounces had been obtained from the claim. The New Zealand Herald's special mining reporter has been describing at some length the operations at the Waihi Grand Junction mine. He says: "I found at No. 4 level that the southeast crosscut was within 50ft or so of the point where the Royal lode is expected to be cut. This reef has been opened up in the Waihi mine to within 120 ft of the eastern boundary, at which point it is 34ft wide. The chances, therefore, that it will continue into the Grand Juncion ground are strong. It is a peculiarity of the Royal lode in the Waihi area that it twists in its course from time to time. If it retains this characteristic it may be to hanc either sooner or later than anticipated in the Grand Junction, but in any case it should be intersected before very long. The crosscut is penetrating good firm country, which is known to be reef-bearing. Three lodes, Nos. 3, 4, and 5, have already been cut further back in the crosscut, and several leaders of smaller dimensions have also been passed through, some recently. The importance of the cutting of the Royal lode is that on its present true course it will traverse the Grand Junction for the whole length of ground contained in its area." A message from Auckland received in New Plymouth this morning states that the Royal lode has been struck. Mr T. K. Skinner received a telegram this morning from Puriri from Mr T. J. Steele, a director of the Champion Mines, Ltd., stating that a very satisfactory crushing took place yesterday. This is taken to mean that the whole of the machinery worked well, without reference to gold yield, because it was intended to give the machinery a trial with a quantity of low grade ore, from which no particular result was looked for.
