NO-LICENSE.
ATTITUDE OF ANGLICAN CHURCH.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 26
The debate on the no-license question was resumed at the Christchurch Diocesan Synod this afternoon. The following motion was proposed by Archdeacon Averill and carried: "That this Synod, while unable on the evidence at present before it to express any authoritative or unanimous opinion oil the relative merits of license and nolicense, welcomes every legitimate effort to decrease the many deplorable evils due to intemperance in the use of alcoholic liquors, and commends the whole matter to the earnest and careful consideration of all church, people of the diocese." The Rev. Mr Matthias then moved : "That this Synod commends no-license as the only available remedy at the present time for the grave and increasing evils of intemperance." After discussion the proposal was lost, the voting being as follows: — Ayes: Clergy 12, laity 18. Noes: Clergy 27, laity 10.
WHAT INVERCARGILL MINIS-
TERS SAY.
INVERCARGILL, Oct. 26.
At a meeting of the Invercargill Ministers' Association to-day it was unanimously resolved to place on record the conviction, based on extended observation, "That the effects of no-license in Iriveroargill since its inauguration have been decidedly beneficial to the community as a whole. The moral benefits are indisputably great, and of the evil results with regard to business freely predicted by our opponents, there is no trace. Wo have, therefore, no hesitation in strongly recommending this salutory reform."
