ENTERTAINMENTS.

WEST'S PICTURES

A large audience greeted West's pictures and De Groen's Orchestra at tho Theatre Royal on Saturday ni<j;ht. The cinematograph art continues to make rapid strides and Mr T. J. West has kept abreast with the times, with the result that a splendid series of films was included in the programme submitted. It was undoubtedly one of the best ever given here. The pictures were practically flickerle.ss, and were shown by the aid of a powerful machine, so that the smallest detail was easily discernible. A wide range of subjects — both instructive and amusing— w as covered. Tho opening series depicted the meeting of the Kings and Queens of England and Italy on board the Royal yacht. The effect- uas very lifelike and gained the appreciation of the audience. "The Franco-British Exhibition^ series gave an excellent idea of the magnitude of this undertaking. From a scenic point of view the picture "Biarritz" was probably the most beautiful that has been seen at New Plymouth. "Our Navy"— showing (1) The King reviewing the Fleet; (2) Training British Bluejackets, and (3) Sceues m the everyday life of the Handy Man— gave an insight into "Jack's" lite on both land and sea. "Unknown Brazil" and "The Astrachan Fishing Industry" were also highly instructive pictures. Prominent among the humorous films were "The Troubles of a House-agent," "The Mummy and the Professor," and "The Explosive Calf." De Groen's orchestra is composed of clever instrumentalists. It added materially to the pleasure of the evening by its overtures and excellent music incidental to the pictures. A complete change of programme is promised patrons for this evening.

Tho New Plymouth branch of_ the Women's Christian Temperance Union will hold a "Cra&le Roll At Home in Whiteley Hall on Saturday afternoon n.ext. A large gathering is expected. A musical programme will be rendered, and Mr Albert Bruntnell will deliver an address.
