FIRE ON THE MANUKA. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Oct. 25. A fire was discovered in No. 4 hold on board the Manuka about 10.45 p.m. on Saturday. The crew had been paid off during the day, and lumpers knocked off working the cargo about 1U..5U p.m. Mr Lilley, chief officer, found smoke' issuing from No. 4 hold when he came on board for the night. Fortunately all the officers and engineers were "on board, most of them being in bed. They turned out promptly and soon had the fire under, but owing to the dense smoke the fire brigade was summoned on the assumption that the fire was serious. It appears^ to have originated amongst some straw and old canvas. None of the cargo was damaged, and the loss is small. OBITUARY. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 25. A private telegram received to-day announced the death at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, of Mr Sidney Buckland Harris, for many years a resident of Little River, and a prominent figure on a number of local bodies. Mr Samuel Coleman, a well-known Canterbury settler, died yesterday at Riverside, near Amberley, at? the age of 83. DUNEDIN, Oct. 25. The death is reported of Canon Dodd, of St. Paul's, Dunedin; aged 74. He was formerly vicar at Balclutha and in the Taieri. Deceased was occupied in the East Coast mission in 1881-83. HOKITIKA Oct. 26. Mr H. J. Hansen, who has beon a resident of Hokitika since 1865, and was formerly proprietor of the Post, Office Hotel and the Princess Theatre, is dead. SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 26. James Weir, aged 25, residing at "Linwood, cut his throat with a razor and died immediately. He had been suffering from consumption. TWO-UPPERS CAUGHT. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 26. A two-up school was raided by the police near Hornby yesterday and several men were caught in the act of playing. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. WELLINGTON Oct. 26. Oliver Robinson, charged with attempting to commit suicide on June 30 by cutting an artery in his arm was to-day ordered to come Tip for sentence when called on. COMPENSATION FOR LAND. , WELLINGTON, Oct. 26. The Compensation Court heard a claim for £1500 brought by Bowden and Hall against the Minister for Railways for land taken in connection with the Hutt railway improvement. Claimants were awarded £500.
