Fulminator galloped six furlongs this morning. Timothy and Golden Glow went together. Sir Artegal worked alone. Haeremai and Andover worked together on the flat this morning. Bagatelle has been turned out. Ben Deely had the mount on Glenullin on th© opening day of the Wellington meeting. The local candidates ran well .but failed to get a plact, UhUnao sttvw » disappointing exhibition and ftni»n«d Hlm»)»t mi q! n ;cutttr§4 Mm A*. .. She has only been given a few gallops but already' shows a big speed. Glen and Mikotahi had a sprint to"gether this morning. Mistress did steady work alone. There was considerable surprise this morning when it was discovered the favourite 'Frisco and Glenullin were omitted from the list of further pnvment«t for the. Cup. It is genernlly thought then 1 bus been »n error, p}»r- • tieulurly »" tlif, cuse of GlonuUin who ix %nid "i<> b» l •"."'MI-: Vtl »'y «»<ll.

Sir Artegal is in the aceeptnneos for tho Derby. .Timothy has 7.12 in the Flying at Waverley, Fulminator 7.1."l and Mistress 7..5 in the Waverley Cup, Mistress 7.3, Andover 7, Golden Glow 7 in the Prince of Wales, and Fulminator 7.1.'} and Mistress 7.."> in the Momohaki Stakes. Fulminator 7.J) (Flying), Haeremai 11.13, (Ladies' Bracelet). Mikotalii 7.13 (October Hack), Sir Artegal i), Timothy 7.13 (Dash Hack Handicap) and Golden Glow 8.11 have accepted for Masterton meeting. The news of K. P. Webster's appointment lo the position of secretary of i he Taranaki Jockey Club will he received wiih general satisfaction by local sports. I join m extending my congratulations. The New Zealander Aeolus is said to ha\e been the best hurdler figuring at

the A. J.C. Spring meeting. H*» led the field all the way in the Second Hurdjj' race. Mr Whyons, his present owner, bought him on the morning oi

the race lor £200 and a £-"H) winning contingency. The value of tho stakes was £268 so that Mr Lyons made *. very profitable piirchjtMC. Pin"" In started a hot favourite for tin- Caiilficld Cup. Bobrikoff and Charters have been scratched lor the New Zealand Cup. Among local horses nominated for the Waverley meeting are Timothy (Flying Handicap), Mistress and FuU niinator (Waverley Cup), Andover, Golden Glow and Mistress (Prince of Wales Handicap), and Fulminator and Mistress (Momohaki Handicap). Trigger's jockey license has b<»en cancelled by the 'i'aranaki Metropolitan Committee. The Hou Oliver Samuel has resigned his position on the committee of the Taranaki .Jockey Club. Chlando failed to get a place in the Wainui Handicap on the opening day ot the Wellington meeting. Mr Dan O'Brien's Maranui was the iir-.t fancy of "Pilot" in the Referee for the Call I field Cup. Writing in the Referee of Mooltan*» win in the Craven Plate at the Y.lt.C. meeting '"Pilot" says it hardly cost him, an eflort. "There is no doubt," he goes on to say, '"if called upon to do so he could have equalled or improved upon the 2.7 recorded by Carbine in beating Megaphone, but on behalf of tho old champion it must be added that on the day he won all the minor events* were run in a very much slower time than those of Wednesday •. last, which suggests that the track was somewhat slower then than now.

Mr R. S. Baldock 'can be said to have done a good stroke of business when he purchased Moolton for £2650 and a contingency of a fifth of the first moneys up to the close df the V.R.C. spring meeting, ijtince the deal was negotiated Mooltan has won three races of a total value of £4726.

A Wanganui message to the Times states that Mr G. F. Moore's sprinter Dusky .Morn dropped while cantering on the Wanganui track an Tuesday morning. "He is winner of six race's; last season and is entered for the Stewards' Handicap. He seems paralysed in his hrndquarters. If .these was one horse more than another >t amongst the locally-owned division. that I would have quickly claimed as the least likely to puzzle me to guess identity that one is Scotty, says an Auckland writer. I had, however, to acknowledge myself beaten when recently viewing the veteran at Ellerslie., As .is well-known Scotty injured himself while contesting the Grand " 3f at ioiial. Hurdle Race at Riccarton in

August ; and he has run down to such ,^n, extent as to present quite, a wrecked appearaiicei / It- required but .one look ' at Scotty's hind legs to show th»fe the blister pot - had been in strong* usq, and altogether the condition of the veteran son of. St. Leger is such as to warrant the prediction that he is unlikely to -make a re-entry on the scene until, the back of the season is reach-

cd. •■ .Though Mr p. O'Brien, the owner of Maranni' is now included amongst residents of New South Wales, it can be said -^.hat the veteran Irishman has many warm friends in New Zealand', and though Maranni was not a popular fancy f.or the race which he won there could be no two opinions as to the vein in which the success of v the rose and black stripes were received. When I came to peruse -the cablegram announcing Maranhi's Cup victory on Saturday my mind was carried back to the bleak August afternoon in 1907 on which the bay son of Malatua was shipped to Sydne.t. I had wended my way on that day towards .the Quay Street jetty, where the Union liner Mp! koia waa lying, and I caught sight of Maranui in a street adjoining. Th© bay colt fairly captivated me; and as T stood by the Mokoia's gangway a little later bidding farewell to Mr. O'Brien, and the colt came down the wharf stepping o,ut in bold style, he drew from me the remark, "Dan, I think you've bred a good-'un." Mr. O'Brien is never very demonstrative; but though the quiet reply that came to my observation was simply, "He's a pretty fair colt," I thought I could detect m the veteran's speech that he was fully in accord with my enthusiastic summing up I have made mention of Maranui having fairly captivated me, and now that the bay son of Malatua ha* won Cup honours' I am tempted to reprint the reference he secured at my hands when he left, the shores of the Dominion last year, and which reads as follows: — Truly, there is something about Maranui to inspire the thought that Mr O'Brien has again bred a racehorse of high quality; and if the hay son of Malatim does not win, some honours before the season is through there will be a good few besides his owner who will have to acknowldege themselves nonplussed. It can be said without an atom of flattery that Maranui is one of the finest looking colts , that has been sent to Australia to uphold the credit of Maoriland as a home of the thoroughbred. — "Phaeton" in the Auckland Weekly.
