STRATFORD.
(From Our Resident Ag«nt.)
Oct. 22. — A compelling sense of public duty, or the expectation af a "scrap," drew a large audience through the rain to hear Mr Symes at the Town Hall last night. The sitting member was in good form and, when the anticipated little personal trouble arose could certainly pride himself on the possession of much superior nonchalance to that of his adversary. Impartial observers are of the opinion that he had the best of the deal, but he will probably be careful in the future to make by word of mouth such communications as those that were read last night. They are very liable to be misunderstood, and the' doings of members of Parliament are subject, and rightly so, to something of that r 'fierce light that beats | upon the throne." t is not only in the cow-shed and dairy that we want scrupulous cleanliness. The three large factories that had arranged to consign to Messrs Wilier and Itiley have now definitely cut loose. Mangatoki consigns to Lovell and Christmas, Kaponga to Wright, Stephenson and Co., whilst J. Nathan and Co. take Kaupokonui. I hear that the new forms of agreement are something fearful and wonderful to behold.
Mechanical curd-stirrers are becoming general in the cheese factories of the district. The steady, regular motion without slopping or spilling is apparently a great improvement upon the hand work. There is a great economy of space as it is possible to work the vats when quite full. The Dairy Employers' Union is not taking any action at present with regard to the Workers' Union demands that have just been served upon employers. It is an understood thing that the Court will not be asked to adjudicate until after Christmas, when the new Arbitration Act will be in force and procedure simpler. Wp> have recently advanced a step in civilisation. At some of the street corners the names of the streets are to bo seen on neat aluminium tablets. A carping critic might object that from most points it is necessary to travel a mile to find the name, but everything must have a beginning.
