BLACKMAILERS SENTENCED
A PLOT THAT FAILED. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. (lWeived Oct. 23, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 22. For attempting to levy blackmail on J. H. Joel by a threat of murder, Charles Winhourne was sentenced to five years' penal servitude and Arthur | C'anham to two years'. [On September 23 Charles Winbourne and Arthur Canham, both farriers, were charged at London with threatening to murder J. B. Joel unless he paid them toOO. Remarkable letters were read in Court. These showed that the writers posed as members of the ''Cameriaste Monenero," a secret society. They wrote to Joel's wife stating that a member of the society had been chosen by lot to assassinate Joel. Joel inserted an advertisement in the Chronicle agreeing to pay. Then another letter was sent to his wife stating that a man would call for the money at Joel's house. When Canham called he was arrested. He .confessed that Winbourne had written the letters and promised him half the money if he assisted.]
