CRITICISM OF THE SCHEMES.
LABOUR PARTY TAKES SEPARATE
MEASURES.
(Received Oct. 23, 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 22.
Liberals are divided in opinion about the unemployed proposals, some considering that the relief measures form a satisfactory palliative and others holding that they are not sufficiently far-reaching. Unionists express tegret that the- unemployed in Scotland . axe not to be utilised in excavation work at the Rosyth naval base. The Labour Party considers the administrative concessions quite inadequate. Members express the opinion that, although plenty of money is available, the municipalities will not find work. The Party has appointed a committee to formulate proposals for tiding over the winter. The Times says the proposals arc satisfactory and worthy of support until they may be proved inadequate or needlessly lax.
The Daily Mail, points out that, by providing work for 45,000 men, Mr. Asquith assists only one in fifteen of the 64.>.000 unemployed. The Daily News remarks that the proposals will afford no relief to unemployed women. The destroyers ordered to be built at fJlasgow will provide employment for 4000 men.
