TIMARU, Sept. 25. The Borough t Council to-night, after repeated discussions and adjournment, resolved by 6 votes to 5 tot reject a recommendation of the general committee that the co-operative contract system should be tried on f6ur miles of treriobing. The engineer (Mr. F. W. Marchant) said the system had never been tried on such work, and he would decline to be responsible for the organisation of the work. He gave, in a long report, his objection tp. the proposal, and this caused some councillors to change their opinions and vote against it.
