Mr Andrew Carnegie lias given £250,000, producing an income -»f £12,500 a year, towards the foundation of a hero, fund in the United Kingdom to reward tho heroes of pcaeo by tho maintenance of their wives aud children.

Mr Carnegie states: "Wo live in an heroic age when we are often thrilled by deeds of heroism, wiiere men and women are injured or killed in attempting to preserve or fescuo their fellows. These heroes of civilisation ought to be freed from the pecuniary cares resulting from their heroism."

Men and wpmen are treated alike under tho fund. Sailors, railwaymen, nurses, doctors, policemen, and firemen in tho British Isles and waters thereof are eligible. Trustees will administer the fund.

The King approves of tho scheme. The trustees are directed that whenever the King expresses his wish regarding a easo his will shall be law.

Andrew Carnegie has now distributed ' £34,000,000. I
