A TERRIBLE NIGHT.

ENGLISHMAN'S ADVENTURE ON SWISS MOUNTAIN. A young Englishman named Jackson has been the hero of an adventtire which involved the passing of a whole night in as perilous and uncomfortable a position as can well be imagined. Mr Jackson had been staying at a "pension" at Vevey, and resolved to ascend the Cape au Maine, a peak about 8000 feet high/ near Chateau d'Oex. He set off alone on the morning of Friday, July 24, and by night had reached the summit of the peak. Then he resolved to return, and while attempting a short cut the rocks suddenly crumbled beneath his feet, and ho slipped over a precipice which drops sheer to the valley. Luckily, his fall was broken by a narrow ledge, and he managed to lay himself at full length upon it, though it was only about eight inches wide. In this perilous position he lay all night without daring to move, and suffering horribly from cramp. Some time after day had broken Jackson's position was observed from the valley by means of glasses, and help was sent. It was- not, however, till late on the Saturday afternoon that ho was rescued by means of ropes, and, aftrr being fed and attended to on ilm mountain, he was brought back to Vevey on the Sunday morning.
