CENTRAL SCHOOL.

BOYS ENTERTAINED BY COMMITTEE.

At the Kia' Ora Tea-rooms last night the Central School Committee entertained the first fifteen, who recently won the football competition, and the' school shooting team, which won the cup at the shooting competition early ! in the year. All the members of the. •committee were present, Mr F. P. Corkill being in the chair. After supper the evening was given up to toasts and selections from Mr Boulton's ,- gramaphone,, and songs by Mr Rudd. The boys were greatly interested in Mr McColl's large telescope, through which they obtained splendid glimpses of the Moon and Saturn.

After the toast of "The King," the chairman, proposed "Our Footballers and Rifle Shots." He congratulated the boys on their prowess, and' said that, while the committeemen were elected ,to look after >^he- educational side of the school work, still they were very pleased to see their success in athletics as well. , Bert Millington (captain) briefly responded for the foot-j bailers and • Lawry , Pepperell for the! shooting team: Mr, Richards, who has rendered . valuable assistance in the training of the boys, also replied. Mr H, Dempsey proposed "The School Committee." He thanked the members for the hearty Interest they take in the school, and for their practical help. Rev. S. S. Osborne and Mr Grant replied. Both .gentlemen congratulated the boys on their success, Mr Osborne dwelling very strongly on the importance of rifle' shooting, as it tended more than anything to promote good living, for no one could be a. good shot without a, steady hand and steady -eye. Mr Osborfce also paid a very high tribute to-Mr Dempseyy who had done so much not only for the mental welfare of the children undefr his charge, but also for the moral and spiritual side, of their characters. Mr Catran .and Mr Frethey also spoke on behalf of the committee.

Mr Rudd proposed "'The Headmaster and Teachers./ He congratulated the boys on their success. He had been a boy himself) not long ago, and remembered his own football days; but, like the other speakers, he urged the boys not to look too much to games. They were not the most important thing in life. He eulogised Mr Dempsey and his staff for the good tone of the school. His children had been in several schools in New Zealand, but were unanimous in giving the palm to tho Central. Mr Dempsey, in reply, thanked tho committee for their appreciation of the teachers' efforts. Messrs Mcllroy, Bocock, and Day also replied. Mr Mcllroy proposed "Our Entertainers." Mr McColl and Mr Bbulton replied. Mr Corkill proposed "Our Hostess, Mrs Kirkby," and Mr Harvey, proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman.

The Takapuna, which arrived from Wellington this morning^ has on board 122 of the immigrants who arrived from Home by the lonic. They are going to Auckland.

A man named J. Ward, employed on a traction engine, had his right foot slightly crushed by a wheel of the enfine at Te Hemii this afternoon. After eing attended by Dr. Fookes he was sent to his, home.

Ab Wanganui this morning a gruesome haul was made by a dredge while working in the river between, the town and the heads. A human leg, a part of the trunk, and some clothing were brought up by buckets. The remains are suposed to be those of a young man named Mason, who committed suicide by drowning about twelve months ago and who left on the river bank a handkerchief tied to a willow tree, a.
