The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from tho High Commissioner at London, dated September 7: — Frozen meat — Tho mutton market is quiet. There is better demand for forward delivery. Canterbury brands 4£d, North Island 3|d. There is less demand for lamb. Canterbury s\d, other than Canterbury sd. The beef market is dull and prices declining. Large arrivals are expected. Hind-quarters 4_d, fore-quarters 3gd. Butter — The market is quiet but steady. Danish 115s, Siberian 109s, Canadian 115s. . Cheese — The market is firm. Canadian makes 61s. Hemp — The market is quiet, but holders are firm. Very little New Zealand hemp is offering. Following are current quotations : — On the spot : Good fair grade £27, fair grade £23 ss, fair current IVfanila £23 15s. October to December shipments: Good fair grade £26 10s,» fair grade £23, fair current Manlia £23 10s. Last week's output from Manila consisted of 19,000 bales. Cocksfoot seed — The market is speculative. Buyers are not keen to do business. Wool — The market is firmer and Continental firms are buying. Following ! are the current quotations for Bradford \ tops: — Thirtj'-sixes low crossbreds lOd, forties low crossbreds lOjd, forty-fours medium crossbreds 11 Jd, fifties halfbreds Is 3fd, fifty-sixes quarterbreds Is 6£d, sixties merinos Is lid. Kauri gum — The market is steady, with improved demand. Current quotations are : — Ordinary to fair three-quarter-scraped 160s, fair half-scraped 100s, brown fair half to three-quarter-scraped 90s, bush fair to good pale and amber-scraped 120s. Hops — The market is stronger and prices have . slightly advanced for all grades. Best English hops 70s per cwt. -Market prospects are unfavourable. The grain markets are quiet but firm. No New Zealand grain is on the market. Following are the arrivals from River Plate during August : — Mutton : London 119,742 carcases, Liverpool 167,083, Hull 8932, Newcastle 7000, Cardiff 13,696, Glasgow 1500, Bristol 2500. Lamb: London 3837 carcases, Liverpool 4980, Hull 1067, Newcastle 500,. Cardiff 75. Glasgow nil, Bristol nil.
