MINING.
The manager of the Beady Bullion mine reports that ho has cut through from the hanging wall to the fodtwall drive, a distance of 58 feet. Fair prospects were obtained all the way. Preparations are being made to sink on the hangingwall, where there is some very good dirt. Twenty feet will be sunk before starting the low level j The Greymouth correspondent of the Otago Daily Times writes under date September 1 : — "A trial run was, given to the machinery of the Dominion sand dredge at Montezuma on Saturday afternoon, with satisfactory results. All the machinery and pumping gear are not yet installed, but the- preliminary run taken last week appears to have givensatisfaction. The small dredge revolves very quickly, and the removal of the debris is thus quicker than would be expected. A well is now being made for the elevator to work in, once everything 13 in proper working order. It is hoped to have all the plant installed by the end of th£ .week, after which time operations will be commenced in real earnest. The promoters are very sanguine of the undertaking, and all interested in the practical working of the long stretch of auriferous sand drifts along the West Coast will wish the venture every success. If the present enterprise demonstrates all that is expected of it. there will be groat development in this form of mining, particularly in this district, where there is such scope for treating deposits known to be uniformly rich once the saving of fine gold is an accomplished fact."
