BREACH OF THE GAMING ACT.

NEWSPAPER FINED.

PALMERSTON N., Sept. 7.

At the Police CouA this morning E. D. Hoben, editor of the Manawatu Times, was fined 5s and costs for committing a breach of the Lotteries and Gaming Act by publishing the statements in connection with the last Wellington races that "Sir 'Frisco should be much fancied in the Parliamentary Handicap," and that "Dawn and Seaman should also be handy when the winning-post is reached." The magistrate (Mr A. D. Thomson) held this to be a contravention of the prohibition against publishing tips. This was the first casfe of the kind in the Dominion.
