VICTORIAN CHEEBE EXPERT

AN EX-NEW ZEALANDER APPOINTED.

In announcing the appointment of Mr George Sawers to* the position of cheese expert to the Victorian Government, the New Zealand Times says: The Sawers family has played a great part m tlio dairy industry of this country, and James and John are rightly regarded as the two best makers we have. The former is one of the most valued instructors on tho Dairy Commissioner's staff, and the latter was the first Chief Dairy Instructor (in the days when the title "Dairy Commissioner" had not been created) of New Zealand. He did excellent work in establishing the co-operative system of manufacture and laid the foundation of a sound system of cheese manufacture. He is now managing the Edendale Dairy Factory — which made a great reputation for its output when James was in charge of it. during a period of temporary retirement from the State service — and last season put up a unique record in cheese competitions at the winter shows. Now a third brother, George, has been appointed cheese expert to the Victorian Government, and George has been appointed because James ?ould not bo tempted to leave this country. George learnt the art of cheesemaking under his brothers, and was formerly manager of the Bruce cheese factory, near Milton. He left this country to manage a cheese factory on the MeKinnon Estate in Victoria, a private undertaking. For years Mr Sawers has done credit to the family reputation. He has easily carried off the chief honours in tho cheeso' competitions of the State, both on the local and the i Home scoring. As cheeso instructor to the Victorian Government ho sho.uld render valuable service.
