ALTERATION OF RULES.
- Some alterations of rules are to: bo submitted (says a Home paper) at a meeting 1 of the Royal „ and , Ancient Club in- August: There '3s no? mention • 'that the hand may be used to brush across the line of the putt. It lias for\ some time been felt that tins conccs-" sioni stood in' danger of being -abused, and BOj>in the new rules, it is. .proposed that "wormcasts, snow, and ice may b& scraped aside with a . club; but the clud must not be lafd with more than ' its own weight upon the ground, ,nor must anything be pressed, down, either with the club or in any other w*j& Thus the hand must not come into ogntact with the putting green. The. penalty is the loss of the' hole 1 . Ther« a?, as hitherto, permission to remove any loose impediment from the green. ' Another., iwpoojfcant alteration is£4n ' the special lulest for :«troke oompjli- ' tions. It is suggested* that if, at tfftv ■ bole, a competitor plap his? first stfxjke from outside the limits of the teeing , ground, ho shall count that stroke from within the limits. The pen«lty for- a breach of this rule shall be disquahncation. Under the prevailing code* ', driving from outside the limits of ., a , • teeing ground entails instant disqualification, no permission to play 5 second shot being accorded. It may be i remembered that last year the Hon. . Mr. Scott, who would otherwise have i won very easily, disqualified himselt 1 from the Australian open championship I owing to a mistake of the kind men- • tioned. , . . \ It is proposed that when playing : through the green, or from a hazard, i a player may have the lin? of the hoJe • indicated Ifc» him, but no mark shall be placed nor shall anyone stand on the > proposed line while the stroke ;s being played. The penalty is the loss of the* hole.
