* (To the Editor,) Sir. — As we have now in the iield several candidates for the Mayoralty they are fairly open to criticism, 1 think. As they are all worthy men and good citizens I should not take, on me the office of critic but <f«jjr one. fact, -which I had hoped would become so apparent to/ one of the candidates, either by a hip-fc from his bes^ErieJftds* oc<an awakening to 'a sense of t&e"fitn«efr .sf things, as to induce him to retire from the present? contest^ «nd bide his time for .'the future, when the objection I and| many' others have may no longer «an*tt* I aiHud© iioriQie fasbt that our Worthy Town Cl^rk'is brotner tb one tof "the candidates. I t doi/t ' for * one moment suggest any improper motives, active or latent, on either side, but to many of us it seems to be an "anomalous position which our Mayor |hould not ■pecupy, as circumstances easily arise in which so cloaca' relationship .would not be for the 6est lntereste of ithe borough. Many in ft) jv«b think as 3 do on this matter v and think that public attention should be called to it, But the question is who shall "bell the cat.?'"' Aj3 no one seems disposed to undertake the ungracious duty, I hare rushed' in where "angels fear to tread" and X hope I shall have^hur,t anyone's feelings as little as possible, I am, etc., • A BURGESS.
