CHEESE FOIISAivEN FOR BUTTER THE DAIRYMEN'S PLIGHT. I A South Taranaki dairy farmer told a Herald reporter yesterday that the cheese exported from' Taranaki during the remainder of tbis season was goi ing to be a mere bagatelle of what was anticipated at the beginning of the "season. - \^> Climatic conditions., are responsible in a great meiisure fop this; but thei;e is also another factor at work*. The price of butter has 'so jumped up that several of the large cheese factories of, the South are now making all haste to' turn out butter.- Riverdale,\ one of the largest factories 'in the; dairying world, it is said, is about to forsake the manufacture of cheese for that of butter. ' \ ' The factories of tlie' factory proprietor, Mr- T. L. Joll, are makinp; haste to manufacture butter instead o^f ohepso. It is said that Mr Joll's largest cheese factory will commence .butter making on Monday next. The interviews given by Mr I>. Cuddie, Dairy Commisioner, who is on his way to England, to Australian pressmen, in which Mr Cuddie told of large consignments . of cheese tha,t would be shipped from' N^jv Zealand have far from pleased the South Taranaki dairy farmers,, whp are considering the advisability of cabling Homo the exact conditions of .the New 4 Zealand producing market. Mr Cuddies statements would have the effect, it is felt, of reducing the price of cheese on the Home markets. , The plight of the dairymen in tbe southern pdrtion of the province is unenviable. So far reaching have been the ravages of the drought that many a small farmer will Itave to bo helped over the financial stile by his factory, if the factory can 'manage to give assistance. •
