*'A TRIP TO CHINATOWN."
The Howard Vernon Company produced at the Theatre Royal last night the musical comedy, *'A Trip to Chinatown." There was a fair attendance. The comedy abounds in funny situations, so that laughter and merriment we.re a .prominent feature throughout the evening. The company created a favourable impression by the finished manner in which the piece was presented. "IVfr. Howard Vernon interprets the part of Welland Strong, an invalid with ono foot in the gravo. His singing was of a high order, and his quotations " caught on," drawing forth roars of laughter. He is particularly amusing when he falls, a " victim " to the charms of Mrs. Guyer, a young widow to whom he makes love. Miss Vivia de Loitte, as Mrs. Guyer, proved herself an artist of high rank. She pourtrays her part "with grace, and her singing is excellent. The character of Ben Gay, who too falls in love with the handsome widow, is well sustained by Mr. J. R. Howard. Miss Iris Vance, as Rashleigh Gay, nephew to Ben Gay, arid the successful suitor for the widow's hand, is a particularly pleasing actress. Her singing is of a high standard. Miss G. Foley, as Mrs. Guyer's coquettish French maid, at once created a favourable impression, both By her actjng and her singing of several pretty little love songs. The minor characters were admirably sustained. The company will repeat the performance to-night, when entirely rfew songs and dances will be introduced.
