THE MOUNTAIN HOUSE.
(To the Editor.) Sir,— After a long and pleasant tlrivo to the Mountain House yesterday it was very refreshing to read your leader [in the evening, so appreciative of the [pleasure and benefit to be derived either jby holiday or health seekers from a visit thereto ; and the longer ■ tho better. That the accommodation is hardly what iis required for delicate invalids is certain, but it is excellent of its kind, and —a point overlooked —'surprisingly cheap; and it has served its purpose | well. No doubt it was only a tentative 3cheme on the part of the Tourist Deiparf.mont, and so well has 7 it prospered that there can now be no question that (apart, from present mddest arrangements) there is ample room for the erection of such premises that tourists, invalids, or tired men of business, willing to, pay reasonable, suras, so that the roost benefit should be derived from the visit. Your article, sir, hardly does justice to the excellence of the road. jFrom town to Egmont Village is pretty well known ; from there six miles ,of a metalled road, and graded so easily that one hardly discerns it is all rising; but inside the gate on the real Mountain Rqjad the engineer has built a road rising 2000 feet in four, miles, never losing a' foot of his rise, and ho part of it as steep as Devon Street in the slopes leading to the centre of the town. In admiring such a piece of. work one could only wish that the engineer had been a little more abroad in Taranaki. After ybur article, Mr Editor,^ all I could say about pressing the claims of such a holiday tQBOtt on ' the* notice of • the Premier would sound like bathos ; but there is one question upon which we all should follow the example of the old Roman Senator, who wound up his every speech expressing an opinion about Carthage; and our incessant cry should. be: "We want a telephone to Mountain House." — I am, etc., <* .■ • '•• . .a: Casual, -t . .- [The Tourists Department has 'nothing to.^do-withv the, v liouse.,.yet; k It /..was • erected in , the .< firsti; place ;by ' sybscriptionv with, a '.Government, subsidy, -and improved sinxse^by the Board ■.in which the reserve' is 'vested. — Ed. :
