Consequently there will be no steamer leaving New Plymouth next Monday for Onehunga or leaving Onehunga next Tuesday for New Plymouth. Captain J. E. Westrup, well known as captain of the Patea Shipping Company's steamers Mana and Kapiti, died at Wellington on Monday. At the beginning of June Captain Westrup, who was then in command of the Kapiti, had to come ashore on account of an internal complaint. He was laid un for a time, and subsequently tried *»• change of surroundings, but came back to Wellington no better, after a brief»absence. He has been ailing ever since, but was in a'fairly satisfactory condition up to Sunday evening, when he took a turn for the worse. The immediate cause of death was the breaking of a blood vessel. Captain Westrup was born in Nelson in 1850, and commenced his seafaring career when only ten years old. Ho climbed the lower rungs of the ladder of success, and eventually became mate of a small trading schooner., JJrom this position he gradually rose until, in 1873, ho secured his master's ticket, -and subsequently was given command of a small sailer, the first of many that he commanded. Captain Westrup was a shareholder in the Patea Shipping Oompany, and was connected with the company from its inception. He leaves a widow and threo daughters.
