MAIL SERVICE TO ENGLAND.
AUCKLAND, October 10. At a meeting of tho council of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon a resolution was carried empowering the chairman, Mr. N. A. Nathan, to make representations to the Government with a view to obtaining an improved mail service between Now Zealand and England. Members generally agreed that tho loss of the San Francisco service was to be deplored ; at the samo time an All-Red routo was hoped for. A GAME OF CHANCE. • _j * TIMARU, October 10. Dor aid Campbell, was fined £10 and costs (7s) in the Magistrate's Court this morning for having played a game of, chance at tho Labour Day sports. UNUSUAL COMPENSATION CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 10. Harry Fisher; a carpenter at Spreydon, sued the Tramway Board to-day, before Mr. Bishop, S.M., for compensation for damage sustained by falling over the trapdoor' of a sump in Cathedral Square, placed for the convenience of the Board. His foot caught in the hole aud he fell back, being injured and unable to work for three months. Tho Magistrate awarded £2o compensation, MUNICIPAL WORKMEN'S HOMES! WELLINGTON, October 10. Tho City Council to-night appointed a committee to consider the advisability of purchasing, under the Public Works Act 'b¥ f otherwise, a suitable area within or near the city for the purpoee of erect<ing workmen's homes.
