BOXING.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — Kindly allow me in a few words to reply to "Citizen's" letter of yesterday's issue. In it he. asserts that the disappointment in the event of the evening was because there was not enough blood shed and not enough damage done to enable the intellectual audience to think> they had got their moneys worth. In this "Citizen' 'shows his ignorance. As a matter of fact, where the disappointment came in was because the beauty (which "Citizen" makes particular mention of) was given, and because there- was not enough science shown to avoid it. The audience would have been better pleased if the event had gone the full time, and the more science shown the better — not, as "Citizen" puts it, the more blood shed the better, for at no time dp they wish to see bloodshed. I would like to impress upon "Citizen" that it is not necessary that there should be blood shed and damage done at a boxing tournament; in fact, the more science shown the less blood shed, and therefore more appreciated by the audience. As to "Citizen's" remark re the fair sex not being amongst the audience, in the first place the ladies are not catered for, not because it would be out of place to be there, but because the promoters have quite enough old women (excuse the phrase) to deal with. In conclusion, I would ask "Citizen" if at any time he got into trouble and he had to defend himself, and he hit his opponent on the jaw, and that hit was the means of beating his foe, would he not think that hit was a beauty, or would he let his opponent hit him on one side of the face, then turn the dther side for its share? — I am, etc.,
