RETRENCHMENTS AND INCREASED TAXATION.

United Press Association. — By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. (■Received. August 14, 8.9 a.m.) CAPETOWN, August 13. Mr Watson, Colonial Treasurer, has delivered his Budget for 1907. It shows a deficit of £640,000. It is estimated that in 1908 the expenditure will reach £8,063,000, and the revenue £7,764,000.

The Government Has announced its intention to make retrenchments in -the Civil Service. An increased tax on incomes above £10,000 will be proposed. It is also intended to establish an official department to promote South African industries as against trade in imported goods.
