PERSONAL.
Mr James Livingston, of whom much has been written in connection with the olden times in Taranaki, bears the rank of Captain, though the fact seems to be little known. When Britons were in danger and the rally "To arms!" was sounded Mr Livingston joined as a private. Three weeks afterwards he was appointed Quartermaster-Ser-geant ; his next promotion' was to a full captaincy!, The commission has never been cancelled, nor has he resigned.
