LABOUR AND INDUSTRIES.
NEW PLYMOUTH INSPECTOR'S COMMENTS. (Telegraphed by oar Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 30. The Inspector of Factories at New Plymouth in his annual report to the Department of Labour says: — "It is pleasing to report that the year just ended t has been the most prosperous experienced for many years owing to the substantial increase in the high prices obtained for butter and cheese. Farmers are pleased at the financial success of their industry, which is .the more deserved, owing to their arduous work and long hours. "During the year five petroleum oil companies havo been formed, with a capital of about a quarter of a million. At the present time the Moturoa Oil Company is sinking five shafts, which are expected to be completed in the course of two months. Oil experts say the indications of a payable field are excellent. If the results are as anticipated Taranaki has a bright future in store. "Trades generally for three parts of the year have been busy,, especially the engineering and iron trade. Sash and door workers, carpenters, painters, etc., have had their fluctuating periods. Tailors and dressmakers have been fairly busy, often times complaining of their inability to get girls. Boot factories have done a very steady business this year. "One hundred and forty-one factories have been registered, employing 549 males and 86 females* — an increase of twelve factories and thirty-eight workers. "The Shops and Offices Acts are working fairly well. There- was one prosecution, and this has been the means of obtaining a stricter observance of the law. There are a few even now who keep their assistants to the full extent of the half-hour's grace. "The Servants' Registry Offices are well conducted. The awards under the Arbitration Act are well observed. The relations between employer and employee arc very cordial." In conclusion, the Inspector says it is very pleasing to note the great advancement in trade generally that has been made throughout the district throughout the year, arid there is every prospect if a continuance.
