SHOP ASSISTANTS' WAGES.
United Press Association — By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. SYDNEY, July 30. Tho State Arbitration Court award gives suhsrantialy better wages and conditions to shop assistants all round. BIG INCREASES. THE EMPLOYERS OBJECT. SYDNEY, July 31. The Shop Assistants' award embodies provision for an advance of about 30 per cent, in wages generally; in some instances the increase is 40 to 50 ]>er cent. Tho wage for male assistants of nine years' experience is fixed at £2 10s; for females, not less than 27s 6d. The maximum number of working hours is 53 per week. Tho employers'* representative at the Arbitration Court dissented from tho clauses of the award relating to remuneration. Ho declared that tho minimum rates wera excessive, especially for female 3. If these rates were ultimately adopted and made the common rule, they would tend to bring great loss and in some cases ruin to business people.
