ECMONT ROAD.

ERECTION OF A PUBLIC HALL.

There was a large attendance at the Egmont Road School last night at the meeting convened by Messrs. Stanley and N. W. Hill, ior the purpose of considering the acquisition of a site for a hall. Mr. Stanley was voted to the chair.

A vote was taken on the question of whether it was the wish of the meeting that a site should be acquired. A show of hands indicated that nineteen were in favour of getting the ground and none against. An offer was then made to the meeting by Mr. H. C. Sampson, who said he would be prepared to let the settlers have a site of a quarter of an acre on the Egmont Road, and one of half an acre on the Henwood Road. The latter being considered too small, two and a half acres was offered. Mr. Sampson would charge £5 for the Egmont Road site and would give the money towards the erection of the building. The two and a half acres would cost £25.

As to the price of, the hall, it was said that the shell of the Warea hall cost £120. This was taken as a guide, and it was considered that the building they would require would be about the size of the Warea hall.

The Chairman said they had no hall and no church in the district, and were behind other communities; the only thing they had was what the Government had given them — the school. The Chairman moved that the 2£-acre site on Henwood Road offered by Mr. Sampson should be acquired. Mr. N. W. Hill seconded.

Mr. C. Barriball said that if they were going to have an Egmont Road hall they should have it on Egmont Road,, not on some other road. They had a metalled road right up to their doors, and why put the hall on a site away from a metalled road? He moved- in favour of securing the site ou Egmont Road.

Mr. E. Locke seconded.

The voting on the amendment on a show of hands was declared by the Chairman, to be even — eleven in favour and eleven against. A division being called for, the voting was : — For Egmont Road site, 19 ; against, 10. Some of those present were loud in their complaints that a quarter acre was too small. The Chairman declared that he would put no money into a quarter acre site. Mr. Sampson then said that sooner than see the people stuck he would sell an acre.

The Chairman then declared the meeting closed.
