THE WAITARA HARBOUR BILL.

THE DEPUTATION TO AVELLING-

Messrs Connett and N. King left for Wellington by this morning's mail train as a deputation appointed by the New Plymouth 1J arbour Board yesterday, to oppose the Waitara Harbour Bill before the Local Bills Committee. The bill comes before the Committee to-morrow.

YESTERDAY'S MEETING.

The voting at yesterday's meeting of the New Plymouth Harbour Board, held ito discuss the bill, was as follows : — For the motion (to send a deputation to oppose the bill) : The Chairman (Mr Connett), Messrs King, McLean, Price and Ward. Against: Messrs Thomson, Hughes, and Hine. For the amendment (to take no action- at this juncture) : Messrs Hughes, Hine, and Thomson. Against: The Chairman, Messrs King, McLean, Price, and Ward.

Owing to pressure of time, the following portion of the discussion was omittod from our report in yesterday's issue : — As to having support assured, the Chairman said that* the companies would not give assurance four or five years ahead, but he was quite certain the boats would come. Instead of a Home boat lying so long at Wellington, she would come hero for & shipment provided she could load in twelve hours. Mr Kirig, in replying to Mr Hughes' imputation of dilatoriness, said that they had a good excuse. They did not know that the standing orders of the House had been altered. As to whether steamers would come here or not, he could show the members letters from London that would convince them that a boat would come if there was the necessary depth of water in the harbour.

In reply to questions from Messrs Thomson and Hine regarding the grounds on which the deputation would oppose the Bill, the Chairman said they would oppose it on the ground that the Waitara people were trying to get out of further liability. This closed the discussion.
