NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. "The~ annual meeting dl the* }Qo?th Island Poultry, Pigeott and Canary Association was held at New Plymouth yesterday. -Mr C. H. Pickering presided/ The .delegates present were: — Hastings, T. Stewart; Masterton, W. Hail ; Waihi, J. T. Nicholls ; Waikato, J. M. Thomson; Whangarie, Schmackenburg; New Plymouth, S. Olliver; Wellington, L. O. Hooker; Marton, A. W. Wooley ; Wanganui, N. Higgie ; Hawera., E. E. Ffomont ;. Auckland, J. B. Tonar ; J. Walker; Inglewood, W. Messenger, and H. Munro (secretary). The President asked if the delegate from Waihi, Mr Nicholls, was the person disqualified^: or, exhibiting at an unaffiliated A. $na F. £hbw. Mr Nicholls retired. Th^e^was a great diversity of opinion among -the delegates as to whether, being & disqualified person, he was eligible, to take part in the proceedings. It was proposed that Mr Nicholls be allowed to attend. The Chairman considered the meeting should enforce the rules of the Association, and said Mr Nicholls had defied the Society, knowing that he was- acting against the rules. He asserted that he knew of men who had pledged themselves to break up the Association. Mr Tonar (Auckland) said Mr Nicholls had not yet been disqualified by the Association and vsjas eligible to attend until this had been done. Mr Stewart then proposed that all members who exhibited at the Palmerston unlicensed show should be disqualified under rule 19. Mr S. Olliver seconded. Mr Hooker proposed an amendment that Mr.'NicJbolls should be admitted at delegate for Waihi,^ . Mr. Tonar seconded^. ,He said that if they could not patch' up things and put them on a firmer basis, he was of opinion the Society would become defunct. The Chairman- said he could not acTonar for judging at the Palmerston A. and P. Show. Mr Olliver thought that all exhibitors showing at Manawatu and also the judge should be disqualified. Mr Tonar explained that he acted, t,s he thought, in the best interests of ( lhe Society, but if liis action was wrong then he was sorry. Certainly his native was right. The, Chairman said he could not } cxsept ,the amendment as it was foreign to the question at issue. Th/e motion was put. The voting beting equal, the Chairman gave Ms casting vote in favour, of the motion. "i The ..voting was as follows: — For — '^Wanganui, New -Plymouth, Newton, Masterton, 'Hastings, and Manawatu; 'against — Hamilton, Wellington, Whabgarei, -Martoai^ Auckland, f Inglewood. ; Mr Walker proposed the amendment, 'of Sir Hooker as a motion. Tfee Chairman said he would put the motion as he wanted to be fair to Waihi. Mr Hooker considered this was a ridiculdus course to pursue as the meeting had disqualified all the exhibitors. During the course of the discussion, which occupied two and a half hours, frequent reference was made to a telegram forwarded by the Secretary to Mr Nicholls "Stating that he would be allowed to attend as delegate for Waihi.
The Chairman said he certainly should have strongly opposed any such step had he have been spoken to before the who was forwarded. He did not agree v. ii>h it. Mr Tonar said it appeared to him Mr Pickering should be requested 5-ot to leave Palmerston as the secretary >vas not competent to interpret the rules. The Chairman said, if Mr To'nar was so disposed, he could continue his sarcasm as it did not hurt his feelings in the least. The fact was the rules were so badly worded they were difficult for anyone to understand and the sooner they were amended the better. The motion"" was carried and Mr Nicholls took his seat as a delegate. The fifth annual report presented by the President, stated that two meetings had been held during the year. It was satisfactory to report the keen in- ■ terest taken by delegates in the Asso- ! ciation's work. The finances were in a healthy state, £20 having been placed on fixed deposit with the Wellington Building and Investment Company. During the year the Feilding and Dannevirke Poultry Societies had ceased to exist. There were twenty-one affili- I ated societies and ten licensed associa- I tions in the North Island against nineteen and nine respectively \in the pro, vious year. Six new championships had been added to the list, making the total 40. The balance-sheet showed £80 12s 3d to be carried forward, £80 being on deposit. — Approved. A remit -from Hastings "That this Society., uphold the action of the North j Island Poultry Association adhering to the rules in reference, to unlicensed societies or . associations/ was withdrawn.' . The second remit from the Woodvillo Society "That the allotment of championships be made by ballot in such manner as the committee may arrange" was rejected. The following remits were also rejected: — From New Plymouth — "That judges shall qualify by examination and not by approval," and "That no per- j son be allowed to sit as a proxy at the I annual meeting of delegates unless he is a financial member of the Poultry Society of the town in which he resides ; that) isr, provided such a- society exists in the said town." From Manawatu — "That no affiliated society to the N.i.P.A. enter into an agreement for a combined show with an agricultural society without first submitting same to the N.I.P.A. for its approval." In regard to the last remit tho opinion was expressed that the whole of the trouble which had arisen during the year had been occasioned by the fact that the Association tried to govern what should be done in regard to the shows of A. and P. Societies. A. and P. and Poultry Societies should be given a free hand. It was derided on the recommendation of the Pahiatu Society to withdraw the disqualification of Mr J. O. Suckling. On the motion of Mr Thomson, seconded by Mr Hooker, it was decided to recommend the incoming committee to allot tho championships in groups henceforward in preference to dividing them as at present. In reply to a question from Mr Hooker >the- Chairman stated there was no limitation to the number of Poultry Societies that should be allowed to become affiliated to the Association. It was decided that a special meeting of^the Association should^ be convened MttAZt-'tt&ziy tfctpdtocr.'th© purposfe of revising the rules of the Association. The election of officers resulted as follows: — President, Mr C. Goodson, Hawera; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Casey and Paul Hunter ; secretary, Mr A. M. Conroy, , Hawera ; treasurer, Mr J. E. Cowell, Hawera. The secretary was voted a^n honorarium of £10 10s Od for his services during the past year. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring President. WAIRARAPA SHOW.
