PETROLEUM.

Work in connection with" the Taranaki Oil. Boring and> Freehold Co.'s bore at Carrington Road is proceeding smooth!^. The hard conglomerate is still being encountered, but there are now indications of better country being reached.

The Inglewood, Oil Boring and Prospecting Company hafe during the week completed the erection x>f all necessary shedding, and the boiler and most of the machinery is now in position. If the weather is fine it is expected boring operations will be commenced at the end of next week.

Good progress has been made at the Moa Company's property at Inglewood. The derrick and the boiler -and machinery sheds are now complete. The boiler and machinery have also been plaood in position. Boring operations will be commenced in the course of a few daye unless anything unforeseen happens. Everything at the bores of the -Tai a£ naki Petroleum Company is reported to 1 be in a satisfactory condition except at Noi 4, where the casing has parted. ; •It w,ill take a few days to recover thi.3. Work at No. 5 bore has begun. On Thursday night the bore was down some 40ft. At Nq. 3 the sin. casing is down, to 2205 ft., while the total depth of the bore is 2244 ft. N.o. 2 bore is cased 2005 ft., and has a total depth of 2080 ft. A shackle recently broke and let the sand pump and a. lot of wire rope down, but this will soon be recovered.; No. 1 bore is still running oil, although the pressure is now getting less. It is hoped. ;that before long, cleaning out may be commenced. It is now antici-pated<rtka.t-.ttho proposed new duty on oil well Wbes, tools and machinery will be remitted, probably v on a declaration that they are specially imported for oil boring purposes only.

At the Bonithon bore Mr Keith has reached a depth of 1480 ft. At 1440 ft. he passed through .j^put ,§£t. of .oilboring sandstorfe giving* a good show cf oil and strong gad. Owing to the short supply of casing in h i aAd J only a. single shift is being worsted* .Everything ,is. working smoothly.
