' A social was held by the Women's Christian Temperance Union on Thnrslay afternoon in the Baptist Church, to meet the friends who had worked to get signatures to the anti-totalisator petition ; also to welcome Mrs Dewar, president of the Auckland W.C.T.U., and Mrs Hughejs, New Zealand Superintendent of Literature. Both ladies had at* tended the Alliance Convention recently held in "Wellington*, and were able to give an account of the many encouraging things they had seen and heard there. The aggressiveness of the Alliance, the .new method to be employed in purifying the electoral roll, the extinction of the Alliance debt, and many other interesting things were told by Mrs Dewar and Mrs Hughes. The Superintendent of Petition Work reported that the paper had been signed vorv willingly by men and women of al] classes; and emphasis was laid on the great assistance rendered by the ministers of churches calling the attention of their congregations to the petition and urging them to sign it. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the workers who freely gave their time to gain this result. The Superintendent of the Clothing Department asked for children's warm cast-off clothing to be left at Mrs Boon's, Buller Street, next to the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
