VOLUNTEERS.

A match between the Taranaki Rifles and Mangorei Rifle Club took place on the club's . range yesterday afternoon. It was won by the club by 57 points. The ranges were 200, 500. , and 600 yards. The last distance was fired for the most part in the dark. The arrangements' were good/ and the visitors were hospitably entertained at tea at Mr. Smith's, house. •*•***' ' 1 The — following were the scores: — Mangorei Rifle Club— T. Marett, 99 ; M. , Marsh, 91; A. Marsh, 90; J. A. Bathen,' 85; C. A. Oliver, WjE. J. Smith, 77; G. Herbert, 77 ; W. A. Oliver, 57— total, 656. IPaftanaki Rifles— Private Banks, 95; Corporal W. -Bruce, 94; Private A. Marett, 72; Lieut. Lever, 71; Corporal Armitage, 71 ; ..Captain Bellringer, 68; M. Buchanan, 66 ; Private Bacon, 67 — total, 598. i. O • The range, which is in a far more convenient position for visiting teams than' the old one, is very well equipped, and the club deserves great credit for its enterprise. A firing mound is necessary at the 600 yards point, as the side of the hill slopes towards the target and makes the prone position very unpleasant. I should imagine from the contour of the bills that in some winds the range would be a very tricky one. i A return match will be fired shortly. Work in connection with the Rifles' concert is going on very well. I understand that at the church parade at Whiteley Memorial Church-there will be special music appropriate to the occasion.
