WRECK OF THE SURPRISE.

THE SOLE SURVIVOR'S STORY.

AUCKLAND, July 23.

A telegram from Tairua states that a messenger from Ohui has just ridden over and reported' that the scow Surprise ran -on the rocks, about a mile from the north end of Ohui beach, and is a total wreck. The captain, mate, and two seamen are supposed to be drowned. ,A fifth has got ashore, and .found his way to Ohui, where he is being well looked after by Mr. James 'McGregor. He is badly knocked about, and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two. His name is Harry Jackson. From what can ( be gathered from his account the scow dragged her anchors right from Slipper Island, and went ashore on the coast, early on Sunday morning. On the 28th of last month the members of the crew were as follows : — J. T. Jalliere (skipper), who was taken on in place of R. W. Cliff e, the latter being sick when the vessel was last here; H. W. Jackson, aged 20, of Norfolk Island ; A. Stewart, aged 19 ; E. Johansen, aged 19; W. Kelly, aged 17. The last two members of the crew signed on when t|he vessel was here last month. The above comprised the crew at the time she left this port.
