Jennings,, M.HJ& 3|3 | who was one of the Parliamentai^party that left Wellington last wee£ ass journeyed over the Main Trunk Jinejoute, arrived from the North by .^b this morning. He returns' to Wellington by the mail train to-mo*row, ' .* On the occasion of his' promotion to a seat on the Council of Defence Colonel Collins was entertained the other evening at the Grand Hotel, Wellingi ton, by the officers of the Wellington Rifle Battalion, of which he has been commander since its inception nine years ago. The Chairman, Captain W. *G.'. Duthie, in proposing the Coloners health, traced his career since he joined ? the Volunteer fdrces.ain 1865 in Taranaki. He described him as an excellent officer and the beau ideal of a man, possessed of the capacity for drawing out of his men the best that was in them, and the> characteristic of- always doing for his men the utmost that wiild possibly be done. He concluded- by presenting to Colonel Collins, for himself and Mrs Collins, .a silver tea and coffeo I service as a memento of his long: *""" Ja•ciation with the battalion.
