WELLINGTON, July 20.

The Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting opened to-day in fine weather. The attendance was large, including his Excellency the Governor, Sir Joseph Ward, the Hons. Carroll, Millar, and Findlay, and members of Parliament. The sum of £15,308 was passed through the totalisator, being £3856 more than the corresponding day last year. Th-3 winning double 'on the Parliamentary Handicap and Winter Hurdles paid £113 11s.

Results.

Stewards' Handicap, six furlongs— St. Bill 1, Gawain 2, Jolly Friar 3. Also started— St.. Claimer, Platypus, Chicane, Makikihi, Kaiuku, Pardon, Silver Shell. Won by a length. Time, 1.19. Dividends, £5 12s and £1 7s. Miramar Hack Handicap, seven furlongs—Wakaraka 1, Truthful 2, Tongaroa 3. Also started-— Te Arai, Compass, Warlock, Pearlie Vale, Nero, Hinupai, Gold Guard, Scenery, Lady Storm, Papatawa. Won by two lengths. Time, 1.34 3-5. Dividends, £6 5s and £8 ,9s.

First Hack Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters— Stayboy 1, Waipu 2, Matakakiri 3. Also started — Kaipeti* peti, Golden Comb, Top Rose, Southern Cross, Regulation, Idasa, Oasis, St. Albert, Royal Blue, Playmate, Black Squall, Dulcinea, Rahu. Won by half a length. Time, 3.24 3-5. Dividends, £19 and £3 Is. St. Albert and, Waipu were bracketed on the machine.

Parliamentary Handicap, one mile — Ellerton 1, Aeolus 2, Kurawaka 3. Also started — Montego, Narcotic, Chatterer, Clanchattan, Whakawehi, Seaman, Intelligence, Matoari, Hatley, Lad} Warwick, Shrapnel; Shell, Naptha, La Torpedo, Rosegrove. Intelligence and Kurawaka were prominent for half way. where Ellerton took charge and wou comfortably by half a length, Kurawaka three lengths away. Time, 1.47 3 : o. Dividends, £5 16s and £4 17s. Winter Hurdles, two miles— Lull 3, Asteroid 2, Cavalry 3. Also started— Prospector,. Pushful, Evenlode, Merriwai, Bonheur, Ben Jonson, Levant. Ben Jonson and Lull led for a mile and a half, where the former dropped back beaten. Asteroid challenged Lull, but the latter held the advantage, and won by two lengths. Time, 3.52 4-5* Dividends, £7 5s and £2 ss. Trial Plate, six furlongs — All Red 1, Wallasy 2, King Post 3. Also started— Hill Spring, Alluvial, Don Carloß, Defeat, Yosami, Specious, Merry Zealand, Mukutihi, Monkey,, Grand Circle, Blue jßell, Royal Star, Lucretitis, Blue River, I Master Leß^e. Won by three-parts o: la length. Time, 1.20 2-5. Dividends, £2 38 and 17s.

Te Aro Hack Scurry, five furlongs. Weight 9.o— Tpa tuhi 1, Waihuka 2, Aotea 3. Also ran---Barley, Strathcona, Naumai, Truthful, Tawhera, Martyrium, Ancycle, Oblivion', William, St. Killian. Won by half a length. Time, 1.4. Dividends, £2 10s and £1 6s.
