THE NEW "LORDS."

Thirteen members of the Legislative Council sat in the Chamber while the new appointees were going through the ceremony of being sworn in. Judged as a whole, they looked more youthful than otherwise. Capt. Tucker, of Gisborne, certainly carries more grey hairs than he would care to count, but Mr Paul, of Dunedin, on the other hand, lopked_as if he had just emerged from his teens. The motions expressing condolence with the relatives of those politicians who have gone o^er the border during the recess gave three of the new Councillors an opportunity to figure in the prosaic pages of Hansard for the first time, and they acquitted themselves with dignity and judgment. Mr J. B. Callan, of Dunedin, took exactly two minutes to place on record his appreciation of the services of the late ! Hon. W. M. Bolt. He did not make use of a superfluous word, and the same remark applies to Mr J. T. Paul, who also spoke in appreciation of a fellow I Labour advocate. Mr R. A. Loughnan contented himself with a brief but kindly and appreciative reference to the late Hon. L. Walker, who had been a personal friend of his for years.
