READ AT PALMERSTON (By our Special Reporter.) In connection with what may be called "Side Gatherings" at Palmerstonshow, several interesting papers have been read. PRIZE ESSAY. v Mr. J. Curie, secretary of the New Zealand Factory Butter and Cheese Makers' Association, read the prize essay on " Buttermaking in New Zealand '" on Tuesday night, and at its conclusion it' was announced the paper had been written by* Mr. C. Dickie, of Waverley. PAPERS. A series of papers were down on the programme for to-day (Wednesday)." At ten o'clock Mr. J. Burt Veale, Woodville, discoursed on '* The Economic Advantages of Mechanical Milking as compared with Hand Milking; (a) Laboursaving ; (b) Its Relation to the Condition and Quality of the Milk." At 11, Mr. F. Thomson, Dairy Inst., gave a paper on "The Management of a Butter Factory ;" and at noon the Hon. R: McNab gave an address*. In the afternoon two other papers were given, " What can be done to improve pastures where it is impossible to plough," and " Buttermaking," by Mr. F. W. B. Greville, and Mr., .A. G, Shirley, Dairy Inst., respectively. t
