STRANGE MAN IN THE HOUSE.

AN EXCITING EPISODE. j Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 19. A resident; of Alfred Street, Onehunga, was awakened this morning between five and six o'clock by hearing noises in the kitchen, and, on grasping a revolver and proceeding to investigate, he found a strange man in the house. I On the intruder being asked bis business he replied: "Surely a man can get a feed in his own house," and, it is alleged, immediately closed with bis questioner. A v desperate struggle ensued, during which chairs were broken and tables ; but eventually the stranger | was overpowered, and Constable Malone fwas se*t for. The intruder was arrested, and from inquiries made this morning it appeared that the man had sat some time on the verandah, and had then got into the house, probably by the door, which was not securely fastened. The contention is that a mistake, was made in getting into the wrong house, as nothing in the shape of burglary was attempted, and the arrested party had only been living in the district about a fortnight. The matter was brought up at One-" hunga Police Court this morning, but when accused was called on he was too ill to appear. The case was adjourned.
