ORGAN RECITAL.

Mr A. Millar Potts'ssecond organ recital took place last evening before a fairly large congregation, and the recitalist fully maintained the standard of excellence seib in his initial performance. Theft Mendelssohn sonata (No. 3), with which the recital opened, received sympathetic treatment at the hands (arid feet) of the organist, the fugal movement (which, by the way, in its subject is strikingly reminiscent or the frenzied call of the tenor in the same composer's "Hymn of Praise," viz., "Watchman, will the night soon pass?") was rendered with the breadth and dignity which it demands, and the exquisite andante with which it concludes was especially charming. Smart, the mos"t scholarly and melodious of English writers for the organ, was represented by his andanle con moto in. A, • which was skilfully registered sd as to- bring out its lovely contrasts of tone. The great G minor fugue (Bach) prefaced by a fantasia nbt often heard with it, was a good test of j the- organist's powers from which he emerged successfully. As a foil to' the i forogoing, two bracketed items, viz : f , ! the air "Wherever' you walk," from Handel's .ySemele'/'-'-and the minuet! from the same composer's overture iio "Samson" were played, tho latter b^~rag, to our mind, treated' in too legato , a style to realise the delicate phrasing that the first and third sections require.Af ter the collection Guilmant's Funeral . -March," "wjth "its lovely Seraph's Hymn, was, finely, played, the weird ,' and descriptive character of the music being admirably pourtr>yed. A "pleasing melody by Silus, and a fine fantasia by Tours, both executed' in finished style, brought an enjoyable recital to a conclusion. ■ '•
