ORGAN RECITAL.

An organ recital was given last evening by Mr A. Midler Potts at St. Mary' 3 Church, but was unfortunately marred at an early stage by a "cipher" on the pedal organ, which obstinately refused to "hold its tongue," thereby producing a cacophony which must have been as . disconcerting to the organist as it was distressing to his hearers. The first item was Handel's overture to the cantata "St. Cecilia's Day," the various , movements of which" were effectively executed. This was followed by a "Song without Words" (by Davidoff, transcribed by E. H. Lemare) which proved most enjoyable, the contrasted 1 melody and accompaniment being effectively registered arid tastefully rendered. Then came Bach's prelude .and Fugue in A minor, and while proceeding on its stately way the above-men? tioaed pedal note "took a hand", and produced effects no.t* contemplated by the composer. The organist bravely stuck to his task -to the end. As completion of the programme was impossible, the recital was, brought to, a close ■ by collection and a hymn. We may say that what we heard gf Mr Potts' playing whetted our* appetite for more, and we hopq to gratify it this evening when a second recital will take place at 8 o'clock. The defect in the' organ has been set right.
