Mr McGawen discredits the cabled, repoM Mr^Deakhr's pro? phecy as to reverses to be sustained by the. Labour Party in New South Wales and Queensland. Mr Deakin 's prediction" was received with astonishment in Labour ranks. JVfr Prendergast declared «6hat it suggested to his mind that Mr Deakihhad found himself in th§ position of Baron Munehausen, who, when losing the conndence of the people of Africa, resorted to the expedient W importing shiploads of fudge.' Mr Deakin was apparently following the Baron's example.
