FRANKLEY ROAD SCHOOL.

COMPLAINTS AND AN INSPECTION.

Built about a quarter of a century ago, the Frankley Road school is not fitted w.ith \ latest ventilators,' hotwater radiators, anjct up-to-date desks and teachers' appliances. Nor is it a beautiful piece of architecture. Moreover the floor gives considerably under a man's weight and the walls show the first signs of decay. Serious complaints about the condition of the building were made by Mr W. L. Kennedy at last night's meeting of the Education Board. - He said it was a disgrace to education in the colony that such a Fchool should exist. ; As proof of its insanitary -condition', he mentioned that three children had fainted, in class,, .Members of the. Board ex-, pressed the opinion that the complaints made recently were exaggerated. However, it was generally agreed that the best course for ts£i&i}ai&.itet takerwa&V to make a personal inspection. The .members of the Board drove t6 the old, school-liouse this morning. , They were met by Mr iff. Atttbury, one?o€^i&<e commissioners of thfc Frankky Road school. The inspection appeared to satisfy all that 1 the Building was' not' old' enough to warrant its condemnation. The walls are fairly sound, and the weakness of the floor. is' not serious. The room is not overcrowded in comparison with other schools. However, it was agreed that there was need for improvement in the ventilation and lighting When the members of the Board returned to the office, Mr Kennedy moved that the architect* be instructed to put in proper roof ventilators and two new windows, to paint the school inside and out. The motion was carried. It was decided to ' postpone *tne painting till the midwinter holidays, but to carry out the other works forthwith. It was also decided to call the attention of the School Commissioners to the need for improvements in the grounds and the outhouses of the school.
